What IS Relay For Life?
Relay For Life is a fun-filled overnight event – complete with entertainment, food, games and lots of fun. The purpose is to celebrate survivorship and raise money for our American Cancer Society.
During the Relay For Life, teams (recommended size ranging from 8-15 members, although teams of ANY size are accepted) will camp out at the Great Frederick Fairgrounds. Team members take turns walking, jogging or running laps. Each team commits to keeping at least one team member on the track at all times during this 12-hour event.
A Survivor’s Walk starts things off at approximately 7:00 p.m. Friday night and the final lap with all participants walking together takes place at approximately 7:00 a.m. Saturday morning. In between, there is a silent auction, music, and Fun Laps to keep everyone energized until morning.
Luminaria are lit at dark, ringing the track in candlelight in honor and memory of those we hold dear with the soulful sound of the bagpipes filling the air.
Participants are friends, families, local businesses, schools, service clubs, hospitals, churches, and other organizations that organize teams to participate in Relay.
Because Relay For Life is a fundraiser, each team member is asked to raise a minimum of $100. In the case of a school, church, club or business, a group effort is often made to raise funds. Teams solicit donations; have bake sales, car washes, penny wars, and more. They hold fundraisers before (yard sales, dances, Dine Out at area restaurants), during (candy, food, toys at their campsites), and after the event.
