We can always use some help

I want to thank Key 103 WAFY for their support of this event and the HUGE shout out this morning. We are hoping to make this most memorable for all in the downtown area tomorrow night.

We will be meeting at the “Crick” across form La Paz to start setting up balloons and ribbons along North Market Street at 9:30.  Please join us to help if you are available.

The evening is going to be gorgeous, so come down to enjoy the luminary ceremony at 9 PM.

Hope to see you down by the “Crick” tomorrow.

The Cowardly Lion represents Survivors because at diagnosis the patient is fearful, but comes to realize that they held the courage all along to fight and to WIN!

The Scarecrow represents the Researchers who use their intelligence to discover new treatments…and one day a CURE!

The Tin Man represents the Caregiver…whose heart is big and emotions are often evident.

FAQs

  1. Is Relay a running event?  No….Relay For Life is an event where teams of people come together and commit to keeping one walker on the track throughout the night.  Although you are allowed to run, most participants do not.
  2. Is there a fee involved in participating?  A $10 registration fee is charged, but counts toward your suggested minimum fundraising goal of $100.
  3. I can’t stay awake all night.  Can I come for part of the time?  Walkers are not required to stay through the night, but it is definitely encouraged!  Teams are assigned campsites along the perimeter of the track, and many set up tents to catch naps throughout the night.
  4. How many people should be on a team?  Recommended team size is 8-10 participants, although teams come with as few as 3 or 4 members up to 80 members!
  5. But is I only have a few team mates, how can I keep a walker on the track for the entire 12 hours?  Although teams are encouraged to keep a walker on the track at all times, smaller teams may find this to be a problem.  We ask that you do the best you can and understand that sometimes it’s just not possible!
  6. How do I register for Relay For Life?  Registering is easy!  Just log on to www.FrederickRelay.com and click on “Sign Up.”  You can either start a team, or join an existing team.  If you have questions, you can always email laurie.frey@cancer.org for assistance!

What IS Relay For Life?

Relay For Life is a fun-filled overnight event – complete with entertainment, food, games and lots of fun. The purpose is to celebrate survivorship and raise money for our American Cancer Society.

During the Relay For Life, teams (recommended size ranging from 8-15 members, although teams of ANY size are accepted) will camp out at the Great Frederick Fairgrounds. Team members take turns walking, jogging or running laps. Each team commits to keeping at least one team member on the track at all times during this 12-hour event.

A Survivor’s Walk starts things off at approximately 7:00 p.m. Friday night and the final lap with all participants walking together takes place at approximately 7:00 a.m. Saturday morning. In between, there is a silent auction, music, and Fun Laps to keep everyone energized until morning.

Luminaria are lit at dark, ringing the track in candlelight in honor and memory of those we hold dear with the soulful sound of the bagpipes filling the air.

Participants are friends, families, local businesses, schools, service clubs, hospitals, churches, and other organizations that organize teams to participate in Relay.

Because Relay For Life is a fundraiser, each team member is asked to raise a minimum of $100.  In the case of a school, church, club or business, a group effort is often made to raise funds. Teams solicit donations; have bake sales, car washes, penny wars, and more.  They hold fundraisers before (yard sales, dances, Dine Out at area restaurants), during (candy, food, toys at their campsites), and after the event.

Anyone can get involved!  For more information contact Laurie Frey at laurie.frey@cancer.org or visit our website at www.FrederickRelay.com.  If you get involved, you won’t be disappointed!
